AA Rookies Softball - Ages 6, 7 & 8
General Info
AA Softball is geared toward teaching sound softball fundamentals, like throwing, fielding and batting techniques
Typical skill level includes players who:
Are developing the ability to throw and catch consistently
Are beginning to understand defensive situations
RNLL provides team jersey which must be returned at the end of the season
Families provide softball glove, USA approved softball bat, cleats, pants, belt and socks as agreed upon by manager
Batting helmet with face guard is REQUIRED
Fielders mask is optional
A safety base will be used at first base
Parent participation is required - coaching, field prep, team coordinator, etc.
Batting / Pitching
In the first half of the season: pitching will be underhand coaches pitch
In the second half of the season: modified player pitch will be used for the first 2 innings, with underhand coaches pitch the remainder of the game
11" ball
Pitching distance is 35 feet from home plate
Each inning consists of three outs or a maximum of 5 runs
No bunting
Fielding
No infield fly, obstruction, interference rule enforcement.
Each team is allowed nine (9) defensive players in the field, three (3) of which will be outfield
Except where safety is a limiting factor, all players shall be given an opportunity to play all positions
Base Running
Stealing bases is not permitted
Runners must stop advancing once the ball enters the infield and comes under control of a defensive player

AAA Minors Softball - Ages 9, 10 &11
General Info
AAA Softball is both instructional and competitive, with greater emphasis on instruction to prepare players for the traditional game played in Majors
AAA Softball is a modified player pitch with players pitching at least a portion of every game, moving towards full player pitch for the last half of the season, see “Pitching” section for specific rules regarding pitching
Typical skill level includes players who:
Are continuing to focus on skills and pitching development
Have increasing ability to throw and catch
Can hit pitched balls some of the time
Have increased softball awareness of more complex situations
RNLL provides team jersey which must be returned at the end of the season
Families provide softball glove, USA approved softball bat, cleats, pants, belt and socks as agreed upon by manager
Batting helmet with face guard is REQUIRED
Fielders mask is optional
A safety base will be used at first base

Pitching is underhand modified player pitch
In the first half of the season: players will pitch with the exception of after 4 balls; then coaches will finish pitching with that batter
In the second half of the season: players will pitch entirely, no coach pitch after specific date specified by RNLL at the start of the season

Majors Softball continues development of skills, pitching, and strategy
Majors Softball incorporates and encourages a higher skill level to develop a more competitive level of play.
Typical skill level includes players who:
Can make routine infield and outfield play
Can hit pitched balls much of the time
Understand softball situations without adult guidance
RNLL provides team jersey which must be returned at the end of the season
Families provide softball glove, USA approved softball bat, cleats, pants, belt and socks as agreed upon by manager
Batting helmet with face guard is REQUIRED
Fielders mask is optional
A safety base will be used at first base
Parent participation is required - coaching, field prep, team coordinator, etc.
Batting / Pitching
Pitching is entirely player pitch
12" ball
Pitching distance is 40 feet from home plate
Each inning consists of three outs or a maximum of 5 runs
Bunting is allowed
Fielding
Defensive positioning becomes more specialized; not all players get to play all positions each game
Unless there is an overriding safety concern, all players should have the opportunity to play all positions throughout the course of the year
Base Running
Stealing is allowed
No lead offs permitted
